Skills That Go Beyond the Ordinary
LiUNA (Laborers International Union of North America) members are skilled workers who perform a wide range of tasks on construction and job sites. A Journeyman Laborer’s skills spans across multiple industries, and are essential in ensuring that projects are completed safely and efficiently.
Site Preparation and Clearing
- Grading and leveling land
- Excavating and trenching
- Removing debris, rocks, and old structures
- Installing silt fences and erosion control systems
- Preparing foundations
Concrete Work
- Pouring, leveling, and finishing concrete
- Setting and removing forms for concrete pours
- Mixing concrete for various applications
- Installing concrete foundations, sidewalks, and roadways
- Concrete demolition and removal
Foundation Installation
- Digging and preparing holes for footings and foundations
- Installing and assembling foundation forms
- Installing rebar and reinforcing steel in foundations
- Waterproofing and sealing foundations
Asphalt Work
- Operating asphalt paving machines
- Preparing, mixing, and laying asphalt
- Compacting and smoothing surfaces
- Asphalt patching and repair work
- Roadway construction and maintenance
Trenching & Pipe Installation
- Digging trenches for utility lines, sewers, and water mains
- Installing and securing pipes, conduit, and ductwork
- Backfilling and compacting trench materials
- Installing storm drainage systems
Utility Work
- Installing and maintaining underground utilities (water, gas, electricity, sewage)
- Installing utility lines, hydrants, and manholes
- Trenching for fiber optics, phone, and cable lines
Operating Heavy Equipment
- Operating bulldozers, excavators, backhoes, and skid steers
- Operating cranes, hoists, and forklifts
- Operating asphalt and concrete pavers
- Operating rollers and compactors
Material Handling
- Moving materials around the job site using forklifts and cranes
- Loading, unloading, and distributing materials like lumber, concrete, steel, and equipment
- Rigging and securing loads for transportation
Paving & Roadwork
- Roadway construction, including excavation, grading, and paving
- Installing curbs, gutters, and sidewalks
- Installing traffic control devices, signage, and barriers
- Roadway maintenance and repair
Bridgework
- Assisting with bridge construction, including formwork and rebar placement
- Installation of bridge decks, beams, and support structures
- Concrete pouring and finishing on bridge projects
Landscaping & Green Space
- Planting trees, shrubs, and flowers
- Installing irrigation systems
- Erosion control, including silt fences, hay bales, and sediment ponds
- Landscaping for commercial and residential properties
Environmental Remediation
- Site cleanup of hazardous materials (lead, asbestos, etc.)
- Soil testing and removal of contaminated materials
- Decontaminating and restoring industrial sites
Building Demolition
- Demolishing old structures, including residential, commercial, and industrial buildings
- Removing hazardous materials and ensuring proper disposal
- Operating wrecking balls, bulldozers, and other demolition equipment
Salvage & Recycling
- Sorting and salvaging reusable materials (steel, wood, concrete)
- Preparing materials for recycling and reuse
- Dismantling existing structures and systems for reuse
Masonry & Bricklaying
- Assisting with brick, block, and stone installations
- Laying foundations, walls, and other structures
- Mixing mortar and setting up scaffolding
- Working with masons to install decorative stonework
Job Site Safety
- Setting up safety barriers, warning signs, and traffic control
- Inspecting safety equipment and ensuring compliance with OSHA regulations
- Ensuring workers wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE)
Quality Control & Inspection
- Assisting with quality checks for materials and finished work
- Ensuring construction meets specified codes and standards
Scaffolding
- Building, assembling, and dismantling scaffolding
- Ensuring scaffolding meets safety standards for workers and materials
Insulation & Weatherproofing
- Installing insulation in buildings and construction projects
- Applying weatherproofing and sealants to protect structures
Metal & Steel Work
- Assisting with the installation of structural steel beams and columns
- Handling rebar and reinforcing steel for concrete projects
Piling & Foundations
- Installing piles for deep foundation systems (drilled or driven piles)
- Working with pile drivers and other heavy equipment to secure deep foundations
Flagging & Traffic Control
- Directing traffic around job sites to ensure safety
- Setting up detours, signage, and roadblocks to guide traffic
- Assisting with lane closures and managing public safety during construction
Sign Installation & Post Setting
- Installing street signs, utility poles, and barriers
- Setting posts for signs and traffic control devices
Apprenticeship & Skill Development
- Participating in ongoing education and skills development programs
- Learning new techniques, safety protocols, and technology for the construction industry
